Evaluation of experimental compaction tests and modeling of carbon fiber reinforced sheet molding compound (C-SMC)
Motivation
Carbon fiber-reinforced sheet molding compounds (C-SMC) are widely used in high-performance applications, especially in the automotive and aerospace industries. These materials are characterized by their excellent specific mechanical properties, their low weight due to their low density and their design freedom in the construction process.
To produce C-SMC, thermoset matrix systems are reinforced with carbon fibers, usually 2.5 mm long. Carbon fibers are often used, which can be divided into 3K, 12K or 50K elements per fiber bundle depending on the requirements. This splitting of the fibers has a direct influence on the production process, in particular on the force required in the press tool.
In order to better understand these relationships, experiments with different fiber volume contents and fiber roving types are carried out. The aim of these investigations is to quantify the influences of various parameters on the material properties and the production process. In the long term, the knowledge gained will be mapped in numerical models in order to further optimize the production and performance of C-SMC materials.
